Environmental pollution resulting from economic activity has a negative impact on the environmental sustainability of regional socio-economic systems. One of the aspects of sustainability consists in the effective use of industrial and household waste.The article describes the main ways to solve the problems of waste recycling. The author uses the case of the Vologda Oblast to analyze the main trends in the field of industrial and household waste treatment. The article identifies several issues that have negative impact on the environment and reduce ecological stability in the region: the accumulation of industrial waste from processing industries, insufficient development of infrastructure for the handling and disposal of waste, etc. The author points out that the region has several enterprises engaged in recycling and sorting of waste. However, their successful work is hampered by inefficient links between waste producers and recyclers, contradictions between business structures, and flaws in the legislation. The author proposes a number of measures, the implementation of which will improve the interaction between the state and business in this sphere and will also enhance the environmental sustainability in the regional development
