This article discusses the problems that many modern, including scientific, organizations have to deal with: the aging of the software, and in particular, corporate information systems. These problems result from the rapid development of information technology and information society. The development of automated information systems for management of organizations that meet modern high demands is currently an urgent task. The authors analyze existing problems and ways to solve them, and consider the concepts of information and corporate information systems. The article describes main types of corporate information systems, including the universal ERP systems for enterprise resource planning through optimization of internal business processes. The authors make a review of modern Russian market of ERP systems and consider the most well-known software developers (SAP, 1C, Galaktika, Microsoft and Oracle). The present study considers the following solutions to the above problems: the purchase of new software produced by third parties or its development by the staff of the IT-department of the organization. The authors show the main positive and negative sides of both options. The article discusses the experience of solving the problems of upgrading the outdated software and development of modern automated systems for organization management that are available to employees of the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of RAS. The authors analyze the shortcomings of the former version of the corporate information system, provide recommendations for their elimination and improvement of implementation of certain modules of the system. The article substantiates the choice of monolithic architecture of application design. In conclusion, the article reflects the main results achieved, including the specifics of implementation of the subsystem of planning of employees’ activity, control of execution of orders and minutes of meetings. The authors point out the importance of corporate information systems as a powerful tool for automation of organization management. The completion of works on the design and development of the management system of the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of RAS will help implement the widest functionality and provide the leadership of the Institute with a convenient tool to manage the activities of the organization as a whole
