The intensity of migration processes at the country level requires a concentration approach to the management of migration processes. To build adequate migration policy it is necessary to study inter-settlement movements, including their age and sex characteristics. The article shows that migratory movements affect not only a number of territories of arrival and departure, but also their demographic characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the intensity of migration of the population of Vologda Oblast districts and gender features of inter-settlement movements. The analysis of these features is based on such quantitative indicators, as average age of migration flows, average age of the population in municipalities, age and sex migration intensity rate, ratio of men and women. It is found that younger age groups (15–29 years) migrate most intensively, in total migration turnover their share is more than 50%. The peak migratory activity is observed in the group of people aged 20 – 25. The data on citizens’ migration attitudes identified through the sociological survey of the Vologda Oblast population (monitoring “Socio-cultural portrait of the Vologda Oblast population”, conducted by the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of RAS since 2008) serve as quality indicators of the analysis in the causes of migration activity of the population. The article shows that getting education is the main migration reason for men and women up to 30 years. In many municipal entities with a low or medium level of socio-economic development we observe migration gain of persons above working age. It can be noted that the migration of men and women corresponds to general intraregional territorial movements; however, there are principal differences in attitudes and motives of different sex and age groups. The rural areas with a low level of socio-economic development are still a source of replenishment of labor resources: the main migration flows stem from there. The continuing outflow of population leads to the fact that these sources of replenishment of working-age population will soon be over. There is a need to further study the issue concerning factor component of migratory movements within the region
