The article is devoted to the results of the study of the emotional state of graduate and postgraduate students of VolRC RAS during 2009–2018. The relevance of the research lies in the need to adapt to changes in socio-economic conditions, to challenges of scientific and technological progress and successful performance. To achieve this goal, we conducted a theoretical analysis of the concept of “emotional state”, its features, revealed the essence of the basic functions of emotional state in human life, including in the process of training and professional activities. The article presents the experience of monitoring the emotional state of young researchers on the example of a research organization “Vologda Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences” (VolRC RAS). The need for psychological support of full-time graduate and postgraduate students in their training and professional development is justified. The main activities of psychological and pedagogical group of VolRC RAS Research-and-Education Center in the framework of support of students’ educational and professional activities, as well as the structure of the applied questionnaire are presented. We analyze the results of the study, the performance of indicators for each test criterion, and the main conclusions. In the final part of the article measures to preserve a high level of emotional state of students at VolRC RAS are identified. The prospects of this research include the improvement of the diagnostic procedure of the study and the inclusion of additional methodological tools. The materials of the article can be useful to the staff of departments of graduate and postgraduate studies, specialists of psychological and pedagogical support of educational institutions training research personnel, students of pedagogical institutions, employees and supervisors of research and education centers
