The purpose of the work is to identify Moscow’s role in the modern Russian economy. For this purpose, we have analyzed the indicators characterizing the demographic state, provision of educational, medical services, housing, durable goods, creation of infrastructure of a high comfort level of urban environment. The values of the listed indicators for Moscow are compared with similar indicators for the Central Federal District and Russia as a whole. The article presents a large amount of statistical information characterizing the socio-economic situation of Moscow, the Central Federal District and the Russian Federation for the period from 2010 to 2019 in annual dynamics. The analysis allows seeing the opportunities and successful experience of the capital in solving its socio-economic problems and problems that Moscow has to reckon with, ways to solve them for applying this experience in other major cities of the country that have already facing or may face similar difficulties in the future. Statistical information is provided by Rosstat data. Based on the processed information, the article presents a large illustrative material in the form of tables, graphs and diagrams. The information base includes the works of leading Russian and foreign scientists, experts dealing with the problems of territorial development of the country, sustainable socio-economic development of Russia’s regions, the author’s analytical handbook created jointly with the Analytical Department of the Mayor of Moscow and the Institute of Economic Forecasting of RAS, as well as the authors’ own research on the problems of the development of large cities, regional economy
